Chantal Veeraragoo, the co-founder of Wild Mauritius explains her mission.
For my home country of Mauritius, I have dreamt of creating something special and iconic which draws on the unique identity of Mauritius, our diverse peoples, our unique flora and fauna, our sights, our sounds, our smells, to give the world a taste of the genuine flavour of Mauritius, away from the tourist beaches and modern hotels. I dreamt of nothing less than a Designer Brand, one that creates a sense of pride in being able to read the label ‘Made in Mauritius’, and a brand which has upmarket appeal in European markets to discerning buyers.
Over the last three years, I have been working with branding and marketing specialists in the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London to create a unique Designer Brand for Mauritius, called ‘Wild Mauritius’. This brand is under development right now, and what you see in this, the first Wild Mauritius website is just the beginning
The aim of this brand is to bring together the range of design talent now available in Mauritius, and display this in European markets for sale to the discerning public.
It will also create new product sectors which will expand the export potential for Mauritian designer products. Designers, craftspeople, and manufacturers will be encouraged to innovate and explore new markets, using a European base as the centre of operations. We endorse the position of the Government of Mauritius that the expansion of a design ethos in Mauritius should have a social dimension, and our approach will include socially disadvantaged groups, especially women. We also agree that the maximum benefit sould return to the economy of Mauritius, and our business will therefore be based there, with a distribution centre for Europe based in the UK.
This unique shop window will encourage the distribution of Mauritian value-added products in the most effective places, bringing benefits to the Mauritian economy.
Sincerely yours
